Workshop 1: NAPFA Training can be FUN!
Improve your students’ NAPFA performance through fun and engaging activities!
Friday, 24 Feb 2012, ITE College East (3:00pm-4:30pm)
Physical fitness is widely used as an objective measure of the effectiveness of Physical Education (PE) programmes in Singapore Schools. Scenes of physical training in schools prior to the National Physical Fitness Award (NAPFA) are commonplace. If not done well and in an interesting way, physical training can have a negative effect on students. Some may even be put off exercise altogether.
This workshop is conducted in two parts. The first introduces participants to a number of fun and interesting activities that can be used by teachers in schools to achieve good fitness and training effects. In the second part, specific tips for technique correction and improved performance will be shared. All of these would lead to improvements in NAPFA performance whilst making the training sessions fun and interesting, such that the students look forward to future sessions.
Workshop presenter:
Mr Azhar taught in Raffles Institution and headed its PE & CCA Department before joining PESS as a lecturer. He has coaching qualifications in kayaking, rugby, sailing and soccer. He coached the Singapore Schools Rugby Team from 1999-2001. A former state representative in rugby, he has represented Singapore in a number of international matches and tournaments. He is currently in the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) Elite Referees Panel and is also an International Rugby Board (IRB) Referee Trainer.

Workshop 2: SportSmart Skills
Enhancing Sports Performance through PE
“SportSmart Skills (S3) Programme - Enhancing Sports Performance through Physical Education”
Friday, 25 May 2012, ITE College East (3:00pm-4:30pm)
The Singapore Sports School has developed and implemented its SportSmart Skills (S3) Programme for its lower Secondary student-athletes in 2011. The S3 Programme hones physical and games literacy in alignment with Long Term Athlete Development principles. It also focuses on multilateral development of our student-athletes and educates them on fundamental sports science concepts. The sharing will cover the rationale behind the development of the S3 Programme, the programme features and practices, and also a video presentation on lesson ideas.
The key takeaway for participants will be the strategies for implementing a multifaceted PE programme to improve learners’ outcomes in physical and games literacy, and how it can help to enhance the development of their specialised sport.
Workshop presenters:
Mr. Rodney Yeo (HOD PE) and Mr. Gary Tan are part of the team that developed SportSmart Skills programme. They currently serve as physical educators at the Singapore Sports School.

Workshop 3: Plyometrics Explained…
Unsure about how to develop your students’ speed and agility?
Friday, 24 Aug 2012, ITE College East (3:00pm-4:30pm)
Plyometrics training (SSC- Stretch Shortening Cycle) helps in your explosiveness, reactive speed and sprints.
Coaches may sometimes be misinformed about the importance and definition of plyometrics training, or how and when to apply it. The first part of this workshop serves to give clarity to all these issues.
For the second part of the workshop, be prepared for a practical and hands on experience as Alfred takes you through a series of plyometrics drills and exercises (combination jumps, box jumps, bodyweight training etc.) suited for different age groups, and exactly how it will enhance their sporting performance.
Workshop presenter:
Alfred Sim currently serves as the head coach at Reactiv, with several national athletes including Abdul Hakeen and Calvin Kang, under his charge. He is also a strength & conditioning coach and advisor for various sport teams.
Alfred’s qualifications include:

Workshop 4: Teamwork through Physical Education
Teamwork & Fitness all at Once!
Friday, 16 Nov 2012, ITE College East(3:00pm-4:30pm)
Teamwork through Physical Education (TPE) offers students a chance to physically, mentally and emotionally experience how behaviours stemming from the values of Effort, Support and Learning (ESL) can help them experience more success as an individual and team.
This objective is achieved through guided discovery via a series of simple yet physically challenging games, that are conducted in a fun and engaging manner. Students will attempt the challenges twice and focus on how to better their initial effort instead of trying to better another team.
The first part of the workshop will focus on the ESL (Effort, Support, Learning) coaching model and the simple facilitation process used for these challenges.
The second part of the workshop will be a practical one where participants get to experience first-hand some of the simple challenges (Team Agility Circuit , Long Rope Challenge etc.) that they can used during PE classes, or any leadership or team-bonding sessions.
Workshop presenter:
